A very small percentage of people may experience a seizure when exposed to certain visual images, including flashing lights or patterns that may appear in video games. Even people who have no history of seizures or epilepsy may have an undiagnosed condition that can cause these “photosensitive epileptic seizures” while watching video games.
These seizures may have a variety of symptoms, including lightheadedness, altered vision, eye or face twitching, jerking or shaking of arms or legs, disorientation, confusion, or momentary loss of awareness. Seizures may also cause loss of consciousness or convulsions that can lead to injury from falling down or striking nearby objects.
Immediately stop playing and consult a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Parents should watch for or ask their children about the above symptoms—children and teenagers are more likely than adults to experience these seizures. The risk of photosensitive epileptic seizures may be reduced by taking the following precautions: Sit farther from the screen; use a smaller screen; play in a well-lit room; and do not play when you are drowsy or fatigued. If you or any of your relatives have a history of seizures or epilepsy, consult a doctor before playing.
Company of Heroes 2: The Western Front Armies brings the war to the Western Front with two armies for multiplayer battles and single-player skirmishes. Play as the Oberkommando West, Germany’s late-war army, or as the US Forces, Eisenhower’s expeditionary corps.
Using this manual
This manual lists both general controls and controls specific to each of the armies in Company of Heroes 2: The Western Front Armies.
You may also wish to read the Company of Heroes 2 manual, which includes detailed explanations of the tactics you'll need to master to succeed in Company of Heroes 2: The Western Front Armies. Please note that if you do not own the base game, Company of Heroes 2, some information in the manual will not be relevant. However, the general controls, strategies and tactics will still apply.
The Oberkommando West, battle-hardened and freshly re-equipped, are a resurgent and very dangerous foe. Despite being challenged by an economy crippled by years of continuous war, the Oberkommando West still manages to field some impressive heavy armor. Germany’s technical prowess is on full display as its devastating armored force, equipped with a new generation of super-heavy tanks, repeatedly counterattacks the US Forces attempting to drive into the heart of Germany. Seventy-ton “King Tigers” are supported by well-trained infantry: assault Sturmpioneers lead the charge, while Volksgrenadiers take on enemy infantry and vehicles alike.
For a list of the building and unit hotkeys for the Oberkommando West, see Controls: Oberkommando West.
Under the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, US Forces have come ashore on the beaches of Normandy and fought their way deep into Europe, driving back the German war machine. Now battle-weary and spread thin on enemy soil, an army made of citizen soldiers is pitted against a hardened professional military force with over four years’ hard-fighting experience. Facing the best Germany has to offer, the US Forces fight desperately to push back the frontlines.
An adaptable army that will bend but not break, the US Forces have some extremely versatile infantry and vehicles at their disposal, while their unique base structures reflect the temporary nature of the frontlines. Fast light- and medium-armored vehicles, such as the renowned M4A3 Sherman, provide mobile firepower to support their versatile riflemen, while elite paratroopers and airpower disrupt enemy plans deep in German territory.
For a list of the building and unit hotkeys for the US Forces, see Controls: US Forces.
Company of Heroes 2: The Western Front Armies requires you to right-click in order to perform many commands. If you are using a Magic Mouse or Trackpad, your secondary click may not be activated by default. For detailed instructions on how to enable secondary click, see Can I play Company of Heroes 2: The Western Front Armies using my Magic Mouse or Trackpad in the FAQs.
In Company of Heroes 2: The Western Front Armies, you can choose between using “Classic” hotkeys and “Grid” hotkeys.
Classic hotkeys are the default option. They’re easy to remember, because the key you need to press often refers to the thing you want to do (for example, you press A to “Attack” or G to “Attack Ground”).
Grid hotkeys are organized close together, so that you can reach them all easily with your left hand. With grid keys enabled, the layout of the hotkeys is always the same as the layout of abilities in the Abilities grid shown in the bottom-right corner of the screen, so by looking at the Abilities grid, it’s easy to know which key to press.
To change the hotkey type, select Menu → Options from the Main Menu, then select the Gameplay tab. On this tab, Classic Hotkeys is enabled by default; disable it to use grid hotkeys.
The controls listed below and in the rest of this manual assume that you are using the classic hotkeys.
