Playing a multiplayer battle in Napoleon: Total War is slightly different depending on whether you wish to host a battle, or simply join one.

To host:

  1. From the Main Menu, select Multiplayer.

  2. From the drop-down menu, select Total War Online.

  3. The Total War Online screen will appear. Select the Battle List tab.

  4. Select Host Battle.

  5. The Host Battle screen will appear. Select either Land, Sea, Siege or Scenario, depending on which type of battle you would like to play.

  6. The battle settings screen will appear, from which you can customize your battle, including choosing a map.

  7. When you are happy with your settings, select Host Battle.

  8. The Army Setup screen will appear, from which you can choose your faction and army. To invite friends from your Steam friends' list to the battle, click the Invite Friends button (envelope icon). If you would rather leave the game open for players not on your friends' list to join, proceed to step 10.

  9. The Invite Friends dialog will appear. Tick the checkbox(es) next to the name(s) of the friend(s) you wish to invite, then click the Accept button (tick icon).

  10. When you are happy with your settings and all the other players have joined the game, click the Ready! button (tick icon) in the lower-right corner of the screen.

  11. The game will begin once all the players have indicated that they are ready.

To join:

  1. From the Main Menu, select Multiplayer.

  2. From the drop-down menu, select Total War Online.

  3. The Total War Online screen will appear. Select the Battle List tab.

  4. From the battle list, highlight the battle you wish to join and select Join Battle at the bottom of the screen.
