  1. Installation

    As part of the Steam download process, the game has already been installed on your computer. To start playing the game, read the Getting Started section.

  2. Getting Started

    1. Double-click on the Steam application icon. By default this is located in the Applications folder on your computer’s hard drive.

    2. If you are not already signed in, the Steam Login dialog will appear. Enter your account name and password, then select Login.

    3. The Steam application will launch. Select Library.

    4. Highlight Medieval II: Total War in the list of games on the left-hand side of the window, then select Play.

    5. The Medieval II: Total War pre-game Options window will appear. Click on the Play button. The game will launch.

    6. After the loading screens and opening video, the Main Menu will appear. Select Single Player.

    7. The Single Player menu will appear. Select Tutorial.

    8. The Norman Conquest screen will appear. Select Battle of Hastings.

    9. After the opening video, you'll find William Rufus, son of William, Duke of Normandy, leading a force against the Anglo-Saxon army at the Battle of Hastings. Listen to your military advisor, Sir Robert, who will teach you everything you need to know to crush the Saxon dogs!

  3. Medieval II: Total War Performance Tips

    The most important factors in determining how smoothly Medieval II: Total War plays are your CPU speed, the amount of built-in RAM, the type of graphics card in your computer and the in-game settings you select.

    Medieval II: Total War is playable with the minimum specifications listed below, but it will play more smoothly on faster computers with more RAM. However, if you are dissatisfied with the performance of the game on your computer, there are a couple of things you can do that are likely to improve performance:


    In addition to these general Mac actions, there are numerous specific in-game settings you can select to speed up the game. These are listed below in order of performance improvement (largest improvement first). Move down the list adjusting settings until you find an acceptable balance between performance and graphics.


    NOTE: All of these settings are found in either Medieval II: Total War's pre-game Options window under the Display tab or within the game under OptionsVideo SettingsShow Advanced Options, accessible from the Main Menu.

  4. Macintosh Specific Extras - Pre-game Options Window

    Feral games come with a pre-game Options window. This window offers Mac-specific extra features, described below.

    Extras Tab - iTunes Pausing
    Selecting this feature will automatically pause any currently playing song in iTunes while Medieval II: Total War is running. Playback will be resumed when the game is quit or paused.

    Extras Tab - iChat or Messages Away Status
    Selecting this feature will automatically set your iChat (called "Messages" in OS X 10.8 or later) status to "away" while Medieval II: Total War is running. You can select different "away" messages from the pop-up menu. The "away" options are taken from the user's iChat (or Messages) status listings.

    Support Tab - Support - A Helping Hand
    If you encounter a problem with Medieval II: Total War, you can use the Support tab to consult Feral's online FAQs. If your problem is not covered by the FAQs, you can contact Feral using the automated game report system. This automatically creates a file with information about your computer that is useful to the Feral Technical Support team in helping to solve the problem.

  5. Uninstalling

    To uninstall Medieval II: Total War, follow these steps:

    1. Double-click on the Steam application icon. By default this is located in the Applications folder on your computer's hard drive.

    2. If you are not already signed in, the Steam Login dialog will appear. Enter your account name and password, then select Login.

    3. The Steam application will launch. Select the Library tab.

    4. In the library, right-click on Medieval II: Total War™ in the list of games on the left-hand side of the window, then select ManageUninstall.

    5. A dialog will appear confirming that you wish to delete all the game content. Select Uninstall.

  6. Technical Support

    Every effort has been made to make Medieval II: Total War as compatible with current hardware as possible. However, if you are experiencing problems when running Medieval II: Total War, please read on.

    The latest version of the FAQs can be found by selecting the FAQs button in the Support tab of the Medieval II: Total War pre-game Options window (this is the window that opens when you launch the game), or by going straight to the Feral website: http://support.feralinteractive.com

    If the FAQs and/or updates do not solve your problem, then please feel free to contact us. The following information must be obtained before contacting Feral Technical Support:


    All the information required can be obtained by opening Medieval II: Total War and clicking on the Support tab in the Medieval II: Total War pre-game Options window. In the Support tab, click on the Generate Report button. Once the report is generated it will appear as a file in your ~/Downloads folder (the “~” symbol refers to your home directory). Now click on the Create Email button. Remember to attach the Medieval II Total War Report.txt file to your email.

    In your email, please include a brief description of the problem you have experienced with Medieval II: Total War.
