This document is intended to help you answer any questions that you may have about Oni

  1. How can I learn to play Oni and use all the special moves?
  2. I don't have enough physical RAM to run Oni. Can I still play the game?
  3. Oni doesn't allow me to change the default keyboard control layout in the game. Is there any way to change the default keyboard controls?
  4. I'm running Mac OS X and the mouse tracking is bound at the screen edge. Why?
  5. The control key isn't working when I play Oni. Why?
  6. Sometimes I lose mouse control when playing Oni. How can I fix this?

Q : How can I learn to play Oni and use all the special moves?

A : Play the training level in the game. Later in the game, hit the F1 key to review the basic keyboard control and to get in-game hints. Also, check out oni.godgames.com for the latest tips and tricks.

Q : I don't have enough physical RAM to run Oni. Can I still play the game?

A : You may need to turn on and adjust virtual memory for your computer in the Memory control panel. You may need to adjust your virtual memory higher than Oni's preferred memory size for best performance. Anything over 200 MB total virtual memory should be more than sufficient.

Q : Oni doesn't allow me to change the default keyboard control layout in the game. Is there any way to change the default keyboard controls?

A : Oni sets the default keyboard controls on its first launch. If you really want to change the default keyboard layout, you'll need to edit the key_config.txt file, found in the same directory as the Oni application file.

Q : I'm running Mac OS X and the mouse tracking is bound at the screen edge. Why?

A : Mac OS X does not support Input Sprockets, which Oni needs. Run Oni in "Classic" mode to avoid this problem. Alternativly, download the OmniGroup's Oni port and try your luck with that.

Q : The control key isn't working when I play Oni. Why?

A : You probably have a Kensington Turbo Mouse with the proprietary control panel software installed. The control panel may prevent the control key from functioning while playing Oni. Try changing the default keyboard layout by editing key_config.txt to change the mapping for the control key to another key.

Q : Sometimes I lose mouse control when playing Oni. How can I fix this?

A : It's likely that you have a Microsoft Intellimouse with the proprietary control panel software installed. Disabling the control panel software while playing Oni may fix this problem.

Q : The animated scenes are choppy and audio is slurred when I play Oni. How can I fix this?

A : This may be caused by low RAM or hard drive space. Try deleting unneeded files to free up hard drive space, or add RAM.

Q : I'm running Mac OS X Public Beta and the introduction and closing animated movies do no play. What is causing this?

A : This problem occurs because the Bink Shared Library does not currently support Max OS X. Try running Oni in "Classic" mode to fix this problem.

Q : Q. Some graphic elements do not draw with the proper transparency. What is happening?

A : You probably have ATI Rage Pro Graphics in your Mac. Limitations of this video card prevent proper transparency, including some particle effects and user-interface elements.

Q : Oni will not run or display properly. How can I fix this?

A : You may have multiple display adapters from the same vendor (e.g., an ATI Rage II and an ATI Rage 128) installed in your system. They may conflict with each other causing Oni to fail to run properly. Try unplugging the monitor from one of these display adapters to fix the problem.

Q : Oni won't launch correctly, even with the monitor disconnected from one of my multiple display adapters. What is going on?

A : If you still have the extensions and/or drivers installed for the additional display adapter, even with the monitor disconnected, they may prevent Oni from running properly. Disable the extensions and/or drivers for the additional display adapter while you play Oni.

Q : Oni launches at a resolution different than the resolution set the last time I played Oni. What is causing this?

A : If you start Oni on a display that is set to a mode that is not listed in the recommended display modes in the Monitors control panel, Oni may launch in a resolution that is different than the last time you exited Oni. Set your display to a recommended mode to avoid this condition.

Q : I can't run Oni at all on my iMac or original revision beige G3 PowerMac. Why not?

A : These systems were released with the ATI Rage IIc graphics card, which is not sufficient to run Oni. Upgrading to a minimum of a 3Dfx Voodoo 2 or ATI Rage 128 will allow you to run Oni on these systems.

Q : There is a gray bar along the bottom of the screen when I play Oni. Why? How can I view the full Oni screen?

A : You are likely running Action Utilities' GoMac software. This software causes a portion of the game display not to draw. Hide the GoMac task bar in the Action Utilities control panel, or disable the control panel altogether in order for Oni to draw the screen correctly.
